But it feels like a Thursday.

The chem test was over. I can very well have failed it.

The econs lecture was such a breeze. Infact, it's the only lecture I enjoy nowadays. Hurray to econs taught by UniSIM lecturer.

The next lesson is 1.30 tmr.

Nearly end of all lectures.

15 days to exams.

Reverse PIN #

Category: By limboy
I really want to try this:

If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM
machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse.
For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system
recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the
machine.
The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to
the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location. This
information was recently broadcasted on CTV by Crime Stoppers however it is seldom used because
people just don't know about it.

Please refrain internet access to all students for tmr's computing test. They have been using the internet to cheat for their previous test, making those who are the least talented (even with cleaning the computer) seem like geniuses. They cheat by using lecture notes copied wholesale. Only a handful ever writen a simple comment on the test.

I want them to fail.

Got a call today. One of my last hamsters died. Most likely of old age. It might have survived 6 generations of its own kind, according to my brother. Which probably explains its baldness of late, especially around the lower body area.

Should have taken its photo before I hurriedly left the house on Monday morning. The sadness of losing a pet. Its not new, but each death is like taking away one of my own kid.

Facts lesson 101

Category: , , , By limboy
Got this thru the email. Quite interesting facts.

Most people got married in June because they took their yearly bath in May, and still smelled pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

Baths consisted of a big tub filled with hot water. The man of the house had the privilege of the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women and finally the children. Last of all the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, Don't throw the baby out with the Bath water..

Houses had thatched roofs-thick straw-piled high, with no wood underneath. It was the only place for animals to get warm, so all the cats and other small animals (mice, bugs) lived in the roof . When it rained it became slippery and sometimes the animals would slip and fall off the roof. Hence the saying . It's raining cats and dogs.

There was nothing to stop things from falling into the house.. This posed a real problem in the bedroom where bugs and other droppings could mess up your nice clean bed. Hence, a bed with big posts and a sheet hung over the top afforded some protection. That's how canopy beds came into existence .

The floor was dirt. Only the wealthy had something other than dirt. Hence the saying, Dirt poor. The wealthy had slate floors that would get slippery in the winter when wet, so they spread thresh (straw) on floor to help keep their footing. As the winter wore on, they added more thresh until, when you opened the door, it would all start slipping outside. A piece of wood was placed in the entranceway. Hence the saying a thresh hold .

(Getting quite an education, aren't you?)

In those old days, they cooked in the kitchen with a big kettle that always hung over the fire. Every day they lit the fire and added things to the pot. They ate mostly vegetables and did not get much meat. They would eat the stew for dinner, leaving leftovers in the pot to get cold overnight and then start over the next day. Sometimes stew had food in it that had been there for quite a while. Hence the rhyme, Peas porridge hot, peas porridge cold, peas porridge in the pot nine days old..

Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over, they would hang up their bacon to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, bring home the bacon. They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around and chew the fat..
Those with money had plates made of pewter. Food with high acid content caused some of the lead to leach onto the food, causing lead poisoning death. This happened most often with tomatoes, so for the next 400 years or so, tomatoes were considered poisonous.

Bread was divided according to status. Workers got the burnt bottom of the loaf, the family got the middle, and guests got the top, or the upper crust.

Lead cups were used to drink ale or whisky. The combination would sometimes knock the imbibers out for a couple of days. Someone walking along the road would take them for dead and prepare them for burial. They were laid out on the kitchen table for a couple of days and the family would gather around and eat and drink and wait and see if they would wake up. Hence the custom of holding a wake.

England is old and small and the local folks started running out of places to bury people. So they would dig up coffins and would take the bones to a bone-house, and reuse the grave. When reopening these coffins, 1 out of 25 coffins were found to have scratch marks on the inside and they realized they had been burying people alive. So they would tie a string on the wrist of the corpse, lead it through the coffin and up through the ground and tie it to a bell. Someone would have to sit out in the graveyard all night (the graveyard shift.) to listen for the bell; thus, someone could be, saved by the bell or was considered a ..dead ringer..

As I sit here, sipping on 100plus, I'm thinking of the what will happen later at the street challenge. Its a mixture of floorball , soccer, bball and some other smaller insignificant games, roll them all into one, you get one huge sushi called Street Challenge.

We formed a team, or rather Serena did. Old the old guys we knew from YJC. Some call it the "powerline", but I'm just another backup incase one of them breaks their legs. Or need someone to break the opponents'.

Its gonna get messy. Ugly heads always rear when teams are on the verge of losing side. Cheaters, rule-opposing players, fights, stares.

Its been a long time since I felt this nervous. The anticipation, the mental planning...they are all gonna melt away when the whistle blows. Then the love on the rink sets in. I'd liken it to angry sex. Game starts around noon. We are 1 hour from game start as of now.

Moments like this, I live for the hell's gate to open.

Right now I'm bloody pissed with the mother. Reason being that she temporarily booked for a holiday, and I wasn't included in the trip at all, because she "thought I'd be busy with the school restarting".

The holiday is supposed to be around the new year.

Why I'm pissed, is because I had to know the fact that I'm not included, through a third person, which happened to be this morning.

"Eh? your mother going for holiday, how come I don't see your name in the iternary list?"

"What holiday?" I was thoroughly puzzled.

"The one she said the day before, you don't know about it?!"

She didn't even bother to call me to let me know that she is going off somewhere with the rest of the family. And I can stay right where I am now --- in school --- "thought I'd be busy with the school restarting". So technically, they could have disappeared somewhere without me ever knowing.

How's that for being responsible.

Yeah sure, leave me out, AND not let me know. How's that for the word "family".

I suppose the last 5 missed calls from home is to explain herself.

Big bunch of fucks.

How are you doing?

Not fine.

Why?

Blame the lecturers. They suck.

Who?

Well, this point in time, I understand nothing.

How come?

You should try the lecturers yourself. One hour wasting your life in the cold lecture hall, nothing goes in.

Can't you complain?

Can't complain when I can't see my way around in the lecture hall. They have a bad habit of talking in the dark. Worse thing is, the lights are controlled by the person talking on stage.

Does that result in your situation now?

Like feeling helpless, when exams are less than a month away. Thanks, I'm depressed.

Like really?

Yes.

How can we help?

Daryl Hall and John Oates - Private Eyes

Except maybe for the hair.

No routine please.

Category: , , By limboy
I need to get out of my routine. Like now. I had always been comfortable with routines before. But since university started, I'm beginning to hate routines more, with each passing day. Even the days that I go out are getting the same.

Fuck.

Mondays to Thursday early afternoons, school.
Thursday afternoon to Thursday evenings, free to get out of school to get the breather. Hunt for stuff (in town), go out for dinner, pretty much everything else except time for sports.

And that explains the cramps in the hamstrings when I chase after the bus.

Fridays, school. Evening, go home.
Saturdays, Sundays, bum.

Truth be told, my schedule doesn't exactly allow for much freedom. Lessons are literally all the time (cos lectures have to be repeatedly rewinded) rest of the time, I have to catch up with the PRCs god-like academic performance, and now we have a Vietnam god-like in our midst in class -- a boy prodigy, believed to be much younger than his declared age.

I need to break free from this insanity.

Chem sux. It really does. (2)

I looped back about 40 times, this re-lecture. But I still catch no orbital ball!

Willy

Category: , By limboy
There was a chem tutorial today, and something the tutor said totally made sense. This by itself if a great feat, because everything in school hasn't made any sense until now.

Our new organic chemistry tutor is a (Vietnam?) American educated guy called Willy. Don't laugh. He gave the straightest face when he introduced himself in that strong american twang, first as his native name, then as Willy, like he's announcing the death of your first-born child.

"Don't call me sir or anything, just Willy, alright?"

Anyway, this tutor is considerably better, mostly due to the subtle class participation he requires of us. So he'd ask us to go to the board to write down our answers. Along the way, he reiterated how important it is to have to try out the tutorials, rather than come class to copy answers.

Well, another good point about Willy is how he doesn't skimp on whiteboard markers, unlike our local-born Econs tutor. (She's a pain sometimes, trying to get people to squeeze as much data on board from their answers, and at the same time getting them to write in point form to save ink. Wtf?!)

OK, so the tutorial had to go on, and then he flashed the answers for the previous chem test we had last week, getting us to read through the answers on transparency, rather than copy down like crazy. If there was any ambiguos point that we cannot understand him, we're advise to go back to read the text book.

This idea didn't sink in. People were still frantically copying down the solutions. Then it came to a point that he became fustrated at the lagged pace, so he was practically flashing the plastic sheets on the OHP at 2 sheets/min.

"Alright, you can find all these in the textbooks! Don't bother copying them!"

Then he went on to explain how in the real world, chemist often refer to their textbooks for references. So its perfectly normal for us to do the same. "It's not like you can possibly memorise everything! Sure, you need the qualification to get the job, to show that you studied the subject. But seriously, nobody is such a genius to have remembered everything!"

Quite true, I think. Bad news is, you still have to remember your texts.

Back to work.

The other option from studying

Category: , By limboy
I attended a small Hari Raya Dinner at my mother's colleague's house last night. The food was excellent, namely mee soto, lontong and the excellent goreng kantang kuey, which name I cannot phantom.

Some of my mother's colleagues also attended, all females, with average age of about 26 in that group? Adding the ages of her other colleagues (those who are too lazy to go Tampines), the median age would have probably been 24 or something.

Perhaps its the working environment, perhaps its the company they work for (SK-II, all the make up and beauty products), all of them don't exactly look their age. Take for example the manager, who looks like she's just reached her 30s; one the youngest crew who's 20 this year, but looks like she's 29 and speaks like a well-opinioned lady who has worked in the society for quite a number of years (which is not very far from the truth either); another happy-mummy from Thailand, who's about 26 and 2 kids.

The host is of course a semi-malay lady with chinese blood (the grandmother is a chinese), and she's probably around 26 (if my memory serves me correct), with a husband quite a few years her senior and 2 kids, oldest is a very hyper-active boy of 3years, the youngest is a walking toddler-daughter not more than 18 months.

The host's mother (the chief cook) is also very young for her status as a granny, about 1 year junior of my mother, which makes her 47, I reckon.

Now you must be wondering why all the numbers and ages. I was thinking, how messed up one's life can be when you start to mature too young. Take a good example, one of the mother's other colleague --- she's 23 year old this year, with a 6-7 year old son. Yes, she's just out of her secondary school years when she got pregnant. I suppose its her catholic faith/plain stubborness from her parents, that she decided to have her baby instead of an abortion. After she had her baby, she had to come out to work, obviously. Same situation applies to most, if not all of the other ladies. The family didn't have enough money to support their education as furthur. Slacking at home like a tai-tai wasn't an option.

So now you can guess, it can get pretty complicated when you mature too fast. These ladies are working their ass off to make a living, rolling in less than 2K per month, while you are probably now in school reading your econs text while the mother calls you up about 4pm everyday to ask if you are coming home for dinner. The best part is, you were hinted last night before you slept, that you are not allowed to work until you attained your doctorate.

Think about how lucky your life is.

While I mull about how the host got her little girl to call me "Uncle" last night.

As if the computer car in Need for Speed Carbon isn't enough to show the power of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro, here's an except from eGM CarTech:

Camaro fans have been waiting for the return of the badge since the fourth-generation model ended production in 2002. With the help of South Korean designer Sangyup Lee, GM surprised us all with the Chevrolet Camaro Concept at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. However, it has been more than 2 years and we’re still waiting on the production model. Well - keep waiting wait no more. GM finally revealed the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro on July 21, 2008.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro will enter production in February 2009 and will be available in dealerships shortly after in three trim-levels: LS, LT and SS. The LS and LT are powered by a 3.6 liter direct-injected V6 giving it 300-hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. Both engines are mated to a 6-speed manual with a 6-speed automatic as an option. Both V6 models return a fuel-economy of 26mpg with a 0-60 time of 6.1 seconds.

The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS carries a 6.2 liter LS3 V8 that produces 422-hp and 408 lb-ft of torque when mated to a 6-speed manual and 400-hp and 395 lb-ft of torque when mated to a 6-speed automatic. 0-60 comes in 4.6 seconds.

Both LS and LT get a 4-wheel disc ABS as standard and the SS gets 4-piston Brembo calipers. The LT and SS also come with an RS appearance package as an option which give you HID headlamps with integrated halo rings, spoiler, specific tail lamps and 20-inch wheels...

NSman who died had not submitted medical certificate

Category: By limboy
SINGAPORE: Investigations into the death of full-time National Serviceman Joe Foo Wei Rong found that he had medical leave on the day he died but he did not inform officials about it.
The Defence Ministry said in a statement released on Wednesday that a medical certificate dated September 28, 2008 was found in Private Foo's personal bunk cupboard after his death. The medical centre had no documentation of his medical certificate.

Soldiers are required to submit certifications of their medical conditions at the centre.

Private Foo had seen a doctor at the Singapore General Hospital on Sunday. He was supposed to rest from September 28 to 29 for "sprains and strains of the knee and leg", and to be given light duties for the subsequent four days.

The former Singapore Polytechnic student died on Tuesday while doing chin-ups at Lim Chu Kang camp.

It is the first time a full-time serviceman died while doing routine army exercise.

Full-time NSman who died was granted 3-day medical leave

Category: By limboy
SINGAPORE: 20-year-old Private Joe Foo Wei Rong who died at Lim Chu Kang Camp on Tuesday morning had been given three days of medical leave on Sunday for a hamstring strain.

I didn't realise until Andy pointed out the obvious.

The fella has 3 days MC, starting Sunday. His MC was to be consumed finish by Wednesday morning, meaning that he can only book in on Tuesday evening. Either the platoon commander, or platoon sergeant, is technically at fault. Why is he in camp, doing PT at this weird timing? Who authorized the guy to be there? Someone's ass is going to get burnt.

Relatives and friends learnt of this as they paid their last respects to the full-time National Serviceman at the Ubi Teochew Parlour on Wednesday afternoon.

Private Foo collapsed while doing chin-ups at Lim Chu Kang camp. The Ministry of Defence said he was brought to hospital where he died shortly after.

It's learnt that Mindef is investigating why Private Foo was training while on medical leave.

Private Foo will be cremated at Mandai Crematorium on Thursday morning.

Many remember him as an athletic young man who liked to play basketball.

Clifton Seah, the cousin of Private Foo, said: "I'm very shocked. He was a fine young man. My brother was on the phone with him barely 12 hours before he died. It's a great loss." - CNA/vm

20-year-old full-time NSman dies while doing chin-ups in camp

Category: By limboy
SINGAPORE: A full-time National Serviceman collapsed while doing chin-ups at Lim Chu Kang camp on Tuesday morning.
The Ministry of Defence said he was brought to hospital where he died shortly after.

It's the first time a fatal incident has occurred during a daily non-strenuous exercise routine and it's the third military training death this year.

The Defence Ministry said that at about 6.05am, Private Joe Foo Wei Rong, from the 4th Singapore Infantry Regiment, was in the midst of his seventh chin-up, being assisted by a buddy, when he collapsed.

He had already completed six chin-ups without assistance and several other morning warm-exercises, including push-ups.

The servicemen would usually go for breakfast after their morning warm-up exercises.

The Defence Ministry said medical help was immediately given using cardiopulmonary resuscitation and an emergency defibrillator.

At 6.40am, he was evacuated to Tengah Medical Centre in an ambulance about 10 minutes away where doctors continued medical attention.

Private Foo was then taken to the National University Hospital and arrived at 7.45am.

He was pronounced dead at 8.28am.

The former Singapore Polytechnic student was enlisted in July 9, 2008 as PES A - the highest fitness grading.

It's understood he had displayed no signs of difficulty or health problems and there were no strenuous exercises the night before.

Private Foo had not complained of any medical condition prior to the exercise. Investigations are currently underway to find the true cause of the incident.

A report is expected in about eight weeks.

Mindef will convene a committee of inquiry.

Two other servicemen died during training in June this year, recruit Andrew Cheah fainted during a 2-kilometre walk and Officer Cadet Clifton Lam collapsed during training in Brunei. - CNA/vm
